On 17th November, 2024, Touch of Love Outreach had the privilege of participating in the Christmas Parade organized by Aberdeen City Council. This vibrant and colorful celebration captured the essence of the festive season, featuring a dazzling array of displays, music, and joyful interactions that brought the community together. For our New Scots, it was a unique and magical experience that not only introduced them to local traditions but also helped them feel more connected to their new home.
A Magical Journey Through Aberdeen
The parade began at Albyn Place, weaving through Union Street, and concluded at His Majesty’s Theatre. The excitement was palpable as the streets came alive with festive energy, music, and the much-anticipated turning on of the Christmas lights. For many New Scots, events like this are unfamiliar, and they may feel hesitant to participate. However, this parade provided a wonderful opportunity for them to experience and embrace local customs while enjoying the festive atmosphere.
Moments of Connection and Belonging
Our young people were especially thrilled to be part of the parade. As they walked along the route, they were cheered on by enthusiastic spectators and exchanged handshakes with viewers lining the roadside. These simple yet heartfelt interactions created moments of connection that brought smiles to faces on both sides. For New Scots, these experiences are invaluable, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion in their community.
Cultural Exchange and Festive Joy
The Christmas Parade also served as a cultural exchange, allowing New and Young Scots to deepen their understanding of local traditions while sharing in the universal joy of the holiday season. The sight of Santa Claus and his elves, the lively music, and the colorful displays resonated across cultures, creating lasting memories for everyone involved. Events like these play an important role in helping New Scots feel proud, recognized, and truly part of the community.
Building Bridges and Reducing Isolation
At Touch of Love, our mission is to help New and Young Scots integrate into their new surroundings and combat the isolation that many face when adjusting to life in a new country. The Christmas Parade was more than just a celebration—it was a bridge between cultures, offering an opportunity for young people to connect with peers from diverse backgrounds and build relationships that strengthen their sense of community.
