Touch of Love Food making Impact on Families facing severe food insecurity in Aberdeen.

The Touch of Love Food Bank plays a critical role in addressing food insecurity by providing emergency food parcels to individuals and families who cannot afford essential items. With two collection points at Grampian Road and Girdleness Road in Torry, the food bank currently serves around 70 families each week, ensuring that community members in need have access to nourishing food.

Jane Akadiri, founder of Touch of Love, shared the inspiration behind the food bank’s inception: "I was moved to start the food bank after one community member approached me after church and requested just a can of milk and another asked for bread and soup, sharing how hungry they were. That moment of empathy was a turning point, motivating me to establish food collection points in Torry."

Since its founding, the Touch of Love Food Bank has distributed over 20,000 nutrient-rich food parcels, supporting more than 35,000 individuals, including both adults and children. This vital service is made possible through partnerships with organizations such as CFine, Asda, Sainsbury, and Morrisons, whose contributions have been instrumental in ensuring that food parcels are available every week.

Vivian Amakiri, a trustee overseeing the food bank’s operations, emphasized the personal impact of their work: "I know what it’s like to go through the day with a clenched stomach, wondering where the next meal will come from. It brings me joy to know that, through our efforts, people in our community don’t have to experience that hunger."

With the rising cost of living, the number of people seeking assistance from the food bank has increased. Many simply cannot afford basic necessities, and Touch of Love remains committed to providing weekly parcels that contain enough essentials to last until the following week.

In the run-up to Christmas, Touch of Love is also putting out a call for more donations to help meet the growing demand. These contributions will ensure that struggling families have the resources to celebrate the holiday season with dignity and joy.

The Touch of Love Food Bank continues to serve as a lifeline for the community, offering not only food but also hope and support to those in need.
